Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane has distanced himself from fake accounts created under his name on social media.

On Tuesday, Mabuyane's spokesperson Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha said the accounts  the  fake Facebook accounts had pictures and names  of the premier “without his knowledge and approval”.

“There are only two official and real Facebook accounts for the premier and these are: Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane (with Nelson Mandela in the profile picture) and Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane with his official photo as the profile picture,” Sitcwetsha said.

“The three profiles in between (as shown in the screen grab shared with you) are fake accounts that are used by individuals we don′t know and we can only assume that the intention of those individuals is to swindle people.”

According to Sicwetsha, one account was even sharing information about providing money to people.

“These are fake accounts used for mischief and fraud. We call on Facebook as the company to delete these accounts because they are fake and are being used to cheat unsuspecting users of this social network,” he added.

“We also encourage the people of our province and our country not to be friend, like and follow these fake Facebook accounts. People must only use the official accounts that contain the work of the premier of our province, Mr Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane.”
