Rapist Siyakudumisa Adonis, 27, was handed a life sentence after he broke into a house where he raped a 27-year-old mother before turning his attention to her six-year-old child.

The mother's frantic screams as she fought to stop him from violating her daughter woke up her neighbours, who came to their rescue.

After Adonis fled the scene at Macingweni location near Qumbu charges were made at Mount Fletcher police station's family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit. Adonis was tried and sentenced in the Qumbu Regional Court for the October 10 crime.

Eastern Cape police commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, welcomed the sentencing.

“We are pleased by the lengthy sentences meted to rape suspects. These sentences are the results of excellent investigation by our detectives and NPA and the bravery of the victims at court. The sentences cannot take away the trauma and scars from the rape survivors, however the sentences bring solace knowing that the suspects who violated them will never do that to any other person.”
