Four people died, burnt beyond recognition, in a head on collision between an Etios sedan and an Isuzu bakkie on the N2 near Nciba, between East London and Butterworth at about 6.15am on new year's eve.

The vehicles caught fire on impact. All four occupants travelling in the Etios were trapped in the vehicle as the fire engulfed their vehicle. All five occupants of the bakkie escaped the fire with severe injuries and were taken to Frere Hospital for further medical treatment.

Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe, described the incident as a terrible way to end off one of the toughest years, and called on road users to be extra cautious heading into 2021.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Komga Saps for further investigation.
