An eight-year-old girl has gone missing in the vicinity of East London's Hemingways mall.

Police and Dorchester Heights residents have been searching frantically for Lihlumo Mzini, who went missing on Thursday evening, said family member Nolukholo Smanga.

“On Friday morning, her mother, who is my cousin, came to see if she was with me, as she usually leaves her with me when she goes out somewhere.

“This is the first time an unfortunate event like this has happened in our area.

“We have opened a case at the police station.

“We are still searching for the child.

“This morning we had two men with sniffer dogs searching the thick bushy areas,” she said.

A distraught Smanga said the child was last seen wearing a purple round-neck T-shirt with cartoon images, pink tights and navy underwear.

“We are not sure of the shoes.

“She has a scar above her left eye,” she said.

Eastern Cape SAPS spokesperson Col Sibongile Soci said the child’s mother was arrested on Sunday at Dorchester Heights informal settlement for child neglect.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident forms part of the investigation.

“The investigation and the search for the girl continues.

“Anyone with information about the missing girl can contact the investigating officer, WO Sizeka Mangesi, of Mdantsane Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, on 071-604-1788 or Crime Stop, on 08600-1011,” she said.

Some cases of missing children in the Eastern Cape were still unsolved.

Siyamthanda Jim, 8, from Komani, went missing in January 2021. Esethu Xethu, 14, from Willowvale, went missing  in December 2020. Nomvula Makleni, 15, and Sandjay Borman, nine, both from Cradock, were found dead in September 2020.

The national co-ordinator of Missing Children SA, Bianca Van Aswegen, said they never gave up on missing person cases. "We follow up frequently.

“We have recently started with age progression of cold cases in hopes of generating new leads on these cold cases.

“We also have a #stillnotfound campaign where we feature cold cases in the hopes of getting new leads,” she said.
