Former University of Fort Hare (UFH) lecturer and fugitive Professor Edwin Ijeoma was arrested at a police roadblock in Qonce (formerly King William’s Town) on Tuesday.

DispatchLIVE understands that the Nigerian academic was currently being detained at the Bhisho police station and will be moved to Stutterheim.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, confirmed the arrest to DispatchLIVE on Wednesday. He said the Ijeoma was due to appear before the Zwelitsha magistrate court on Thursday.

“Bhisho SAPS can confirm that a 55 years old male suspect was arrested yesterday, 27 April 2021 at King William's Town at about 17h45.

“The suspect was charged for using a motor vehicle without consent of the owner. He is expected to appear at Zwelitsha magistrate's court tomorrow, 29 April 2021,” said Kinana.

In march, Hawks raided several locations in Bhisho, East London and Alice belonging to the UFH as part of an investigation into student admission fraud, corruption and money laundering activities by Ijeoma. UFH director for investigations and vetting services, Isaac Plaatjies, has also laid criminal charges against Ijeoma for the irregular admission and registration of two students, including Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane, theft of money, theft of a university vehicle, and fraud in the region of R5 million for sketchy and unauthorised academic work and programmes for the Eastern Cape Legislature, various provincial departments and municipal authorities without the knowledge and consent of the University, and with a blatant disregard for University policies and rules.

This is a developing story.
