A 51-year-old warrant officer will appear in court on Wednesday after being arrested for allegedly raping a 21-year-old woman at Eastern Cape police headquarters in Zwelitsha.

According to police, the officer had offered the woman a lift when she was hitchhiking from Qonce to Breidbach. Once she was in his vehicle, the officer allegedly faked a phone call summoning him back to the police offices, where he then raped her.

Police said the officer later dropped the woman off in Izele, and she reported the attack at the police station.

The man was arrested at police head offices by the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit and the case was transferred to the Independent Police Complaints Directorate for further investigation.

He is due to appear at the Zwelitsha magistrates court.
