WATCH | Police move in to quell East London CBD taxi violence
Taxi violence erupted in East London’s city centre on Friday morning.
The tensions escalated when 40 - 50 taxi drivers from opposing associations clashed.
According to a shop manager in the city centre who does not want to be named for his own safety, who claims to be an eyewitness to the event, one person was “brutally beaten with stones and sticks” in the clash.
He alleges police fired three shots, with rubber bullets, to disperse the crowd, and a man was hit and taken away in an ambulance.
On visiting the area the Daily Dispatch can report that there is a strong police presence and Buffalo Street, Oxford Street and Cambridge Street are open to traffic.
Sections of Caxton Street are however cordoned off. Updates will communicated as information becomes available...
