Two organisations are on a drive to help matriculants apply at tertiary institutions online.
YouLeadtwenty6 and Shaping New Minds are urging Grade 12 pupils and their parents or guardians in Kwelera, just north-east of East London, to bring their laptops to Jongikhaya High School on July 27, where they will be connected to the internet and helped to apply for places at universities or colleges.
They will also be able to search for available funding as they prepare for tertiary education next year.
Abongile Davani, 26, is the founder and managing director of YouLeadtwenty6, a company that promotes leadership skills among youth.
She said two schools from Xhorha and Ngcobo would also partake in the initiative.
“We are looking to accommodate five schools who’ve shown interest in being part of the drive.
“We are still looking for internet, transport and food donations from someone or businesses who are interested in the event,” added Davani.
Davani said the doors were open to anyone who had a laptop and would like to assist pupils with their applications.
Davani said they were already in partnership with a mobile communications company, which was sponsoring the pupils with pens, keyholders and SIM cards. — mandilakhek@dispatch.co.za..
