Nelson Mandela Metro cliffhanger has DA ahead by a hairsbreadth

All eyes are on the hotly contested Nelson Mandela Metro today where the ruling ANC is going neck-and-neck in a race against the Democratic Alliance.

Tallied votes by 8.30am, had DA with the majority of votes in the metro also winning the first ward – Ward 11.

The DA-led the IEC official results in the Nelson Mandela Bay most of the morning. The party was leading in wards 1, 7, 3, and 32, and the ANC was leading in wards 29, 22, 17 and 18.

Speaking to DispatchLIVE this morning, ANC provincial spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane said the party was confident that it would retain both Eastern Cape metros.

"As the ANC, we are happy, we have done our work and we have executed our strategic plan. What we are seeing in Nelson Mandela is a change of things, regaining of a former UDM ward and other wards. This is an indication that the ANC has done so well," Qoboshiyane said.

In the Buffalo City Metro, during the early hours of today, the ANC was leading with 52.82% and the DA following with 33.67. Even though the official IEC results have not yet shown any party winning a ward in BCM, the ANC commanded a majority in numerous wards including ward 31, 32, 33, 17 and 12 among others.
