Results trickling in overnight highlighted a titanic battle in the key metros of Tshwane and Johannesburg between the African National Congress (ANC) and Democratic Alliance (DA) for control of the country’s capital city and economic powerhouse.
The numbers continued to depict a loss of support in some areas‚ particularly the metro cities‚ by the ANC.
The likelihood of parties having to form coalitions to gain control of Tshwane and Johannesburg looms large and smaller towns such as Beaufort West in the Western Cape.
National results
- National results with over 90% of the vote counted early on Friday showed the ANC with 54.21% of the votes‚ the DA with 25.5%‚ the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) with 7.96% and Inkatha Freedom Party holding 4.51%.
The Freedom Front Plus was hovering around 0.77%‚ the United Democratic Movement (UDM) held 0.61% and the Congress of the People at 0.46% also showed a gradual overall dip in the party’s fortunes.
Nelson Mandela Bay
- There was drama overnight in the Eastern Cape after the ANC challenged the fairness of the poll in Nelson Mandela Bay where the DA had the lion’s share of votes. Police are investigating the complaint but Independent Election officials indicated that the issue was unlikely to affect the outcome of the poll.
The ANC’s Jackson Mthembu on Friday said the party would withdraw the complaint.
By 7am on Friday‚ the IEC was reporting the DA in the lead with 46.6% of the votes‚ the ANC with 40.9% and EFF with 5% in Nelson Mandela Bay.
The UDM could be the kingmaker in Port Elizabeth when it comes to coalitions.
Cape Town
- The DA took Cape Town by a two-thirds majority‚ dealing a blow to the opposition ANC which was characterised by leadership battles and a sexual harassment scandal clouding the reputation of the party’s provincial leader Marius Fransman ahead of the elections.
eThekwini
- Counting in eThekwini in KwaZulu-Natal was characterised by delays and an unexplained computer “glitch”. The state of play in eThekwini at 7am on Friday was: ANC 53.5%‚ DA 30.3% and independent parties 3.6%. – Tiso Black Star Group Digital
