Former MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane was on Thursday declared the new deputy speaker of the Eastern Cape legislature in Bhisho after he was elected into the post uncontested.

The vacancy came into being following the appointment of Bulelwa Tunyiswa as the MEC for sport, recreation, arts and culture effectively from Monday.

Qoboshiyane was uncontested in the position following the lack of interest by opposition parties to nominate a different name.

“Nominations for the position of the deputy speaker were open and nomination forms were availed to leaders of all political parties represented at the legislature,” said speaker Noxolo Kiviet.

“I have received one nomination and the person nominated is honourable Mlibo Qoboshiyane from the ANC.

“I therefore, by the powers vested in me, declare that honourable Mlibo Qoboshiyane has been duly elected as the deputy speaker of the legislature with immediate effect.”

At exactly noon today, Qoboshiyane began to preside over the house sitting for the first time in his new role.
