Eastern Cape mayor resigns amid violent protests

Engcobo mayor Lizeka Bongo-Tyali has resigned, as the ANC finalises its plan to reshuffle the troubled local municipality.
ANC regional secretary Lusanda Sizani confirmed on Wednesday that Bongo-Tyali resigned on Tuesday, saying she did so as the ANC regional executive was busy consulting stakeholders on her possible successor.
“We are also waiting for the provincial office of the ANC to consider the names submitted as possible candidates for the Engcobo mayor positions. In the meantime Khaya Bizana is the acting mayor," said Sizani.
Bongo -Tyali has been under pressure to resign after stakeholders such as the black business forum, South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco), as well as the taxi and the ratepayers associations supported protest marches in March last year over lack of services in the area.
Among their demands was that Premier Phumulo Masualle must dissolve the municipality and appoint an administrator...
