R90m irregular expenditure, failure to elect mayor may force administration

Co-operative governance and traditional affairs MEC Fikile Xasa may have no choice but to place the Amahlathi municipality under administration after it failed to elect a new mayor before the scheduled deadline – twice.
Xasa told the Dispatch he would have to intervene to ensure stability in the municipality.
“I will have to look at the law as to how long we can have that impasse. I will have to send my team to look at whether I have the authority to appoint a speaker, but I know I have the authority to ensure that government is functioning,” he said on Thursday.
