Marawu defects before meeting
Former roads and public works MEC Thandiswa Marawu defected to the African Transformation Movement (ATM) three days after ANC chief whip Fundile Gade wrote to her, asking that she explain “allegations of your association with another political party” hostile to the governing party.
But Marawu, the former ANC provincial treasurer, instead tendered her resignation as an MPL.
In the letter to Marawu, which the Daily Dispatch has seen, Gade asked to meet with the former ANC heavyweight. At the meeting, Marawu would have been required to explain her links to ATM. This was after a video of her with ATM members went viral last week.
In his letter dated March 8, Gade wrote that he had received information “containing allegations of your association with another political party which is hostile to the African National Congress (ANC)”.
“In light of the above, the Office of the Chief Whip extends an invitation to a meeting to ventilate the aforementioned matter at the Bhisho legislature,” the letter stated.
The meeting was scheduled for 2.30pm on Monday. But on Sunday Marawu arranged a separate meeting with ATM premier candidate Veliswa Mvenya and a group of her supporters in Butterworth, where she joined the new party. At the time of her resignation, Marawu was an ordinary MPL.
