Frisbee champs come to EC

EAST London plays host to the South African Ultimate Frisbee National Championships being staged at Hudson Park High School this weekend.

The annual competition, which was held in Cape Town last year, is being held in the Eastern Cape for the first time ever and shows the growing interest locally in the sport known as Ultimate.

Around 16 teams from around the country will be coming to East London to compete, including last year’s champions Ghost from Cape Town who will be looking to defend their title.

Local teams Hammerheads and the Rebels will look to throw a spanner in the works, however, and make home advantage count by giving the favourites a run for their money.

The wildly popular sport in North America is steadily growing in SA and last year a South African national team travelled to Japan to compete at the World Championships.

Many of the South African Ultimate players will be competing at the tournament including East London’s own Brad Taylor.

Taylor who is team captain of the Hammerheads believes with the benefit of home ground advantage they will be aiming for a spot in the quarter finals at the very least.

Ultimate is a fast paced, non-contact sport involving mixed teams each comprising of five men and two women.

Ultimate Frisbee is thriving on the local East London scene, with an active social league taking place every Thursday evening at the Stirling High School fields and new players are always welcome to try out.

“Social league is a great way to get into the sport,” noted Taylor.

The action gets going at 8am tomorrow morning until about 6pm in the evening.

On Sunday games start at 7.30am with the final being contested at 3pm.

The prize-giving will start at 4.30pm.

Everyone is welcome and entrance is free, a DJ will be providing entertainment and snacks will be available.
