Mgubo steps to it to hold off chasing pack

Three men battled it out upfront and one woman dominated the 15km Buco Tomato Trot at the weekend.

All Stars AC’s star runner Bulelani Mgubo registered his first win of 2018, but only after overcoming the early and close attentions of Nedbank’s Zingisile Marikeni and new to the Born 2 Run fold, Vusumzi Zondo.

At three kilometres it was Zondo slightly ahead of Marikeni, with Mgubo a metre back. On the tough hills that lay ahead Mgubo got the ascendency, opening a gap of 40-50m that gave him some respite.

By the time the runners reached the tough uphill climb into the finish at Lilyfontein School the All Stars man had a gap of close to 100m as he raced to the finish in 50:42.

The leading veteran, Marikeni and the 22-year-old Zondo arrived at the entrance to the school in tandem, but the experience of the veteran told on the final hill as he raced into second place in 51:10, with Zondo third in 51:33.

The first master was James Mpunzima of Real Gijimas, while Charl Pienaar of Old Selbornians retained his 60+ dominance.

Born 2 Run’s Hanlie Botha ran hard from the start and was not only the first woman by a large margin, but was also fourth overall in a field of close to 500.

Botha finished in 55:54.

Second was Andrea Ranger of Old Selbornians in 64:41, followed by Madelain le Roux in third and Angelique Norton of Born 2 Run in fourth.

Liz Simons led the veteran woman home, while Debbie Gee of Oxford Striders won the masters race.

In the 60+ category the almost traditional clash between Old Selbornian duo Beanie Beard and Michelle Whittington was renewed, and they finished in that order in 98:43 and 99:09 respectively.

There were no available results for the 5km run.

The four cycle races also attracted close to 500 participants spread over distances of 55, 35, 15 and 8km.

The 55km was won by Jason Reed of Eastern Wheelers. Reed powered his way to a 11:40 win over Ryan Hugo, while Liam Graham finished third, just 1:43 adrift. Reed’s winning time was 2:05:57.

Sally Hayman won the women’s race from Kim van Kets in times of 3:14:32 and 3:27:05 respectively.

The 35km cycle was much closer with Jonathan Rosenstraub leading Shane Baillie and William Leslie to the finish in 1:17:20, which was 1:46 to the good.

Kirsten Nash was first woman home, with Anya Nash second and Megan Emslie third.

The 15km saw Jordan Oberam, Luke Swinney and Colby Wasunt lead the men home, while Madison Mann, Rachel Hayward and Carren van der Merwe were the top three women.
