‘All hail the band of Broos’: Mzansi falls ‘back in love’ with Bafana Bafana
Fans, brands and politicians were all singing Bafana Bafana's praises after the national team's win over Ethiopia at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday night.
Bafana edged out their opponents 1-0 in a crucial 2022 Qatar Fifa World Cup qualifier played in front of 2,000 spectators and staff.
SA took an early lead through an own goal by Ethiopian defender Getaneh Kebede, and the visitors fought for an equaliser throughout the match.
The victory came days after Bafana beat Ethiopia 3-1, strengthening their grip at the top of Group G.
The team played in front of vaccinated fans who were allowed to watch the live match for the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic early last year.
The SA Football Association (Safa) on Monday commended the ministries of health and sport for their efforts in pushing for vaccination and allowing the attendance of 2,000 fans.
“Fans have been hungry to return to the stadium and the small business and informal sector will receive a massive boost as a result of this initiative.
“This news will be received with delight by those who sell food and flags and taxi drivers who take fans to the stadiums. It is part of the economy that suffered a lot as a result of fans not being allowed to attend matches. I am happy. This is the beginning of the restoration of the football economy,’’ said Safa president Danny Jordaan.
Many celebrated Bafana's win in their homes, sharing messages of support on social media.
Woolworths was among those congratulating the team on the win, and OneSA Movement leader Mmusi Maimane praised the side.

Long may this form continue 😍⚽
On Level 1 Government should allow stadiums to fill up 50% of their capacity! They are open air & can have easy social distance 🤷🏾♂️— Mbuyiseni Ndlozi (@MbuyiseniNdlozi) October 12, 2021
