Border girls top side at SA U16 Week

The Border U16 girls’ team on Friday emerged as the top team at the National Girls’ U16 Week at the HT Pelatona Projects Stadium in Welkom.

The Border team defeated Western Province 15-7 in an extremely tight final match.

The two teams had also met in last season’s final, but on that occasion Western Province edged the East London side 12-10 to take the top honours.

This season, however, Border, who won all three of their matches, made no mistake.

They succeeded in building on their victories against the Blue Bulls and their neighbours, the Limpopo Blue Bulls.

SWD, who registered back-to-back victories in their opening two matches, meanwhile, suffered their first defeat of the tournament as they went down 27-0 against Eastern Province.

Hosts, the Griffons, also finished off the tournament on a winning note as they secured a 15-5 victory against neighbours, the Leopards.

The Blue Bulls registered a narrow 7-0 victory against Griquas, and Border Country Districts secured a 12-5 victory against Boland.

The Pumas and Limpopo Blue Bulls, meanwhile, registered the biggest victories of the day, with the Pumas recording a memorable 69-0 victory against the Valke, while the Limpopo Blue Bulls cruised to an emphatic 55-0 win against the Golden Lions.

KwaZulu-Natal also managed to keep the Free State scoreless in their clash, with the Durban side winning 22-0.

The tournament will be followed by the National Girls’ U18 Week in Kimberley from today to Friday, with the competition following the same format as the U16 tournament.

Matches are scheduled for today, Wednesday and Friday. — DDC
