Chippa fail to win crucial game

Chippa United’s battle to maintain their top eight spot in the Premier Soccer League continues as the club failed to win against Martizburg United, settling for a 2-2 draw yesterday at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The game was a crucial one as both clubs needed the points.

Chippa is fighting to stay in the top eight while the KwaZulu-Natal side’s battle is to survive being relegated from the PSL this season.

Ahead of the game Chippa coach Dan “Dance” Malesela said his team was under pressure and needed to win this game in order to maintain their spot in the top eight.

A win would have definitely taken some pressure off the Chilli Boys.

Meanwhile, the draw still sees the Team of Choice stuck at the bottom of the log with 16 points from 22 games.

Chippa has failed to register a win in three previous league games. The last time Malesela’s troops tasted victory was a 2-0 win against Free State Stars.

Both clubs had fought hard throughout the game in a bid to collect maxium points.

It was the visitors who scored the opening goal of the match just seven minutes into the game.

Maritzburg player Philani Zulu’s left foot strike inside the 18 beat Chippa’s goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi and landed in the right corner of the net.

The Chilli Boys received a corner kick in the 11th minute which was taken by Erick Chipeta and headed in by Andile Mbenyane.

Mbenyane’s goal levelled the score line.

The hosts received another corner kick in the 13th minute but this time Mbenyane’s strike was saved by the Marizburg

defence.

Chippa took the lead in the 39th minute when Joseph Molangoane netted a goal. But minutes later the team of Choice player Evans Rusike scored an equaliser. The half-time score was 2-2.

Compared to the first half there was more pace in the second stanza as both teams attacked, looking for the winning goal.

In the 67th minute Chipeta received a free kick just outside the box but his strike went over the cross bar.

The Port Elizabeth side kept on pushing, looking to extend their lead, but their attempts were denied by the Maritzburg defence.

In the 71st minute Malesela substituted Zaphaniah Mbokoma and replaced him with Xola Mlambo.
