A Principal in a Junior Secondary School outside Butterworth who was arrested on rape charges this week has been remanded in custody.
The 51-year-old man was arrested at school by members of the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit on Wednesday.
It emerged he had allegedly raped a 13-year-old pupil at the same school he manages from March to this month.
Police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said: "The victim was noticed by her family members that her behaviour has changed. When she was asked what happened, she broke the silence that she had been raped by the suspect from March till July 2016."
Manatha said the principal appeared in the Ngqamakwe Magistrate Court yesterday where he was denied bail.
He will appear again in court on Tuesday. Police investigation are continuing.
The Eastern Cape department of education says counseling will be offered to the 13-year-old pupil who was allegedly raped by a school principal in a Junior Secondary School outside Butterworth.
Speaking to the Dispatch Online this afternoon education spokesman Loyiso Pulumani said: "This alleged criminal conduct is condemned in the strongest terms especially someone who acts in loco parentis at the school.
This matter will be vigorously and urgently investigated; equally, (medical)support and counselling will be provided to the aggrieved learner and any other learners who may require that service." Pulumani said: "Our school safety coordination unit will also evaluate the safety profile of the school and provide any support as may be required."
