Lonmin miner Siphilo Makhende has died following a “fall of ground accident” at the weekend.

He was injured on Saturday at the E3 shaft at the company’s operations.

“Mr Makhende‚ a rock drill operator‚ was taken to hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning‚ 3 July 2016‚” Lonmin said in a statement on Monday.

An investigation into the accident has begun‚ in conjunction with the Department of Mineral Resources and unions.

“His family members in the Eastern Cape have been informed and company personnel are providing them with support at this time‚” Lonmin said.

Lonmin is one of the world’s largest primary producers of PGMs. These metals are essential for many industrial applications‚ especially catalytic converters for internal combustion engine emissions‚ as well as their widespread use in jewellery.

Lonmin’s operations are situated in the Bushveld Complex in South Africa‚ where nearly 80% of known global PGM resources are found.
