Eight people were killed when a minibus taxi collided head on with a truck in Middleburg, 46 km outside Graaf-Reinent on Saturday night.
 
Seven of them died instantly and another one died on arrival at Midlands Hospital in Graaf-Reinent. According to provincial government spokesman
Sizwe Kupelo, there were three passengers in the truck. The seven other people who died were in the minibus which was traveling from Uitenhage to Gauteng.
 
Six of those injured had since been discharged from the hospital. Four other critically injured passengers have been referred to Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth," he said.
 
The Eastern Cape provincial government is urging all motorists on the road to exercise extra caution and avoid unnecessary loss of life. On behalf of the honorable Premier, Pumulo Masualle, and his executive, we send our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish all those hospitalized, a speedy recovery.
