Eight shark attacks in EC waters in the past 5 years

There have been a number of shark attacks in the Eastern  Cape recently. Some were lucky to escape unscathed, while  others lost their lives in the attacks. Here are some of them:

  •  December 16  2009: A lifeguard, Tshintshekile Nduva,  is  killed by a shark in Port St. Johns. The 27-year-old   died just a  few minutes after the attack.
  •  January 15 2012: A Port St Johns surfer dies after being  attacked by a shark at Second Beach.  The 25-year-old man was  surfing when the incident took place.
  •  March 03 2013:  Fundile Nodumla, 39,  of Mthatha fights off a  shark with his bare hands in shallow waters of Port St John’s  Second Beach. He was admitted to Nelson Mandela Academic  Hospital with injuries.
  • January 15 2012: Lungisani Msungubali, 23, dies after being  attacked by a shark at Second Beach in Port St Johns. He was  surfing with friends when the incident happened.
  • June 16 2013: An east London surfer, Kevin Bracey, is  probably still thanking his lucky stars that he is still alive after  a shark bit a chunk out of his board at Queensberry Bay, on the  East Coast. He suffered minor lacerations around his knee  when the shark attacked him while he was paddling out with a  friend, Dave Boatwright.
  • March 22 2014: A 72-year-old Austrian tourist dies after  being attacked by a shark at the Second Beach in Port St  Johns.
  • January 23 2015 : In East London, a Nahoon  Beach bather  was chomped on the ankle by a shark while cooling off after a  game of beach soccer.
  •   July 18 2015: Mick Fanning is attacked by a large  shark   while surfing in the final of the international live-streamed  competition at Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay.
