The country’s favourite house music group, Micasa will be playing at The Venue@Hemingways tomorrow to celebrate lead singer, J’Something’s birthday.

For the past three years the group has come to East London to celebrate J Something’s birthday with his fans.

J’Something said he decided to come to the Eastern Cape because this is the place that “made him”.

“I could do this show in Johannesburg but I choose to come here. This place made me the person that I am today. The most valuable lessons in life – I got them from the Eastern Cape.

“My mother lives in Port Alfred, I went to school in Grahamstown and I have friends in East London and Port Elizabeth. This is home.”

He added that it was also his way of showing his team where he came from.

While the day is about celebrating his birthday, J’Something said a portion of the proceeds would go towards an East London charity.

“One year we bought toys for a charity and schoolbooks. This year we hope to do a whole month’s worth of groceries for an East London orphanage,” he said.

J’Something recently collaborated with South Africa’s iconic trumpeter Hugh Masekela on the song titled, Heaven in You.

He said spending time with the music icon was the highlight of his career. “I’ve never learnt so much from a person. I feel as a country, we are not celebrating him well enough,” he said.

The song is the official single to Masekela’s album.

“It was great working with him and it was a dream come true for me. He told me a lot of stories. He told me how Brenda Fassie was possessed by the music gods. He also mentioned Michael Jackson … then he said, ‘you my boy are also possessed by the music gods’.”

He added that hearing that from Masekela was like getting approval from a father figure in the music industry.

J’Something said people should get ready to experience something different tomorrow.

“First of all, I will be opening for the band. I will do an acoustic performance; it’s going to be an intimate time with the crowd.”

He added that he would also perform the new song he did with Hugh Masekela.

From The Venue@Hemingways, the group will move to Buccaneers for the official after party.

“Our performance at The Venue will be like a concert but at Buccs it will be the turn up. We will also be performing there as well,” he said.

● Tickets for the event cost R150 and are available at Computicket. —
