EC music awards set for high

Gospel music sensations Betusile Mcinga, Khanyisa, Butho and Yolanda Vuthela will be bringing their message of hope to the Eastern Cape Music Awards (ECMAs), which will be held on February 25 at the Orient Theatre.

The ECMAs received a R500000 sponsorship from Buffalo City Metro and have also partnered with the Daily and Saturday Dispatch, Bay TV, Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, Media LED and SABC1 show Selimathunzi.

The award-winning Mthatha gospel singer, Mcinga said he could not wait to entertain the masses at the ECMAs. “People should expect nothing but authentic worship as we honour God through our music.

“I am really excited to be a part of such awards – honouring Eastern Cape artists,” he said.

Mcinga, who won the song of the year in 2014 at the SABC Crown Gospel Awards, said he was currently working on his fourth album, due to be released next month.

“People will also get to hear all the songs that they have come to love and we will be preaching a message of grace to the masses,” he said.

Awards founder Koko Godlo said preparations for the event were on track and people could expect a complete transformation of the Orient Theatre.

Unlike the first awards, the winners would get more than a trophy.

“There will be some compensation to the winners and a medal as well.

“We hope that as the awards grow we will also increase the compensation,” Godlo said.

He said the awards would cater for all tastes.

“We have every genre represented. Hip-hop, house, gospel, you name it,” he said.

Other artists who will be performing include Nathi, Ntando, Vusi Nova, Mashava, Anisto S, Lil G, Timoti, DJ Bino, Mdantsane Gospel Choir, Yongama and Mavie-M. The 15 categories include: artist of the year; song of the year; best male and female artists; and best hip-hop, kwaito, afro-pop, gospel, traditional music and dance artists.

Some of the artists nominated include Berita, Zahara, Betusile Mcinga, Ntando, Mashava, iFani, Mobi Dixon, Nathi Mankayi and gospel couple Butho and Yolanda Vuthela.

There are also awards for best DJ, best community radio station, community radio programme, radio DJ, and the best newcomer.

Tickets are R190, available at Computicket. Godlo said patrons could bring their own drinks in cans, not bottles. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
