Mobi Dixon goes back to his roots

East London’s top DJ Mobi Dixon was in the Eastern Cape at the weekend for a special tour that formed part of a build-up to the Metro FM Music Awards later this month.

The City Rains hit-maker has been nominated for the best dance album and best male artist for this year’s awards ceremony taking place on February 25 at the iNkosi Albert Luthuli ICC in Durban.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, the DJ said the three-day tour was aimed at showing his appreciation to the people that have been supporting his music and to also encourage them to vote.

“On Friday we were in Queenstown and we had a sold-out show.”

After the Queenstown gig Dixon came through to East London and held a show in Mdantsane.

“When we left Kwa Jeff yesterday morning people were still begging for me,” he said.

Dixon ended off his three-day performances at Monate Corner in the CBD.

Dixon released his debut album titled, Tribal Soul in 2015 and his second album, Live the Music came out last year in September. Tribal Soul sold more than 40000 copies, earning him platinum status.

The former Selborne College pupil said he was honoured to be nominated for a Metro FM award again this year.

“Last year I received my first nominations as an established artist and it was exciting. This time around it is about consistency and future projections as well. This shows that I am here to stay and this is only the beginning for me,” he said, adding that he would see the outcomes on the night of the awards.

Dixon said he would return to the province later in the year for a 10th anniversary tour of making music. His love for music dates back to 2007 when he started his own label, Dance is Kulcha Records and released his first project then.

He got his big break in 2015 with the release of his hit single, City Rains from his debut album Tribal Soul. Since then, he has played on big stages nationally and abroad. “I will be doing a national tour to celebrate 10 years, we will also shoot a documentary and I will be releasing an album towards the end of the year,” he said.

He said he will be releasing the third and last single from his current album before focusing all his energy on the 10th year anniversary work. One of his highlights from the second album, Live The Music, was that he got to work with United States-born house vocalist Monique Bingham on the Mixed Up Chick track.

“The next single coming out is Ezizweni featuring Berita and it will be the last one,” he said.
