Babes Wodumo to rock Sisa’s rugby fans

Babes Wodumo will be back in East London tomorrow, entertaining fans at the SuperSport Rugby Challenge Festival at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane.

The last time the Wololo hit-maker was in the city, she delivered a boring and lifeless performance at the Buyel’Ekhaya Pan African music festival in December.

After the disastrous performance, the normally energetic dance-singer took to social media and blamed event founder Nomahlubi Mazwai, claiming she had been threatened minutes before going on stage.

Babes Wodumo, real name Bongekile Simelane, 23, will be hoping to redeem herself and win back her East London fans with an electric performance tomorrow.

Her bookings manager Melody Mhlongo told Saturday Dispatch that the artist will give a ‘fired-up” performance.

“East London can only expect fire from Babes. This will be her way of apologising to her fans for the way things turned out in her performance last year,” Mhlongo said.

After the artist walked away empty-handed at this year’s South African Music Awards (Sama), she took to social media and ranted, claiming she had not won because the winners had allegedly bought the accolades.

“After the whole ‘ninomona’ saga Babes hired a new PR team to re-brand her image and this will show. She loves and values her fans,” she added.

The re-branding also comes after the artist missed out on an opportunity to attend the Black Entertainment Television (BET) awards in Los Angeles on June 25 due to her not having managed to secure a Visa on time.

SuperSport’s Sandile Luthuli said while Mdantsane rugby fans turned out in their numbers in the first festival last month, having the crowdpuller performing will also attract more people to the event.

“Having Babes performing will work for her as well she will have her fans supporting her.

“However, our main aim is rugby. That is why she is the only artist,” he said.

Last month multi-award-winning rapper Kwesta entertained the crowd.

Border Rugby Union marketing manager Akhona Mgijima said last month’s attendance was proof that locals are hungry for rugby.

“The stadium will once again be packed to capacity because rugby has a lot of support and is fast growing in the Border region.

“It doesn’t matter which teams are playing but if it is rugby of high quality the people will come and show their support,” he added.

Mdantsane side Swallows will open the day’s action against MPM Old Boys at 10am in what should be an exciting Super League club rugby game.

Then at 12.45pm, the Xerox Golden Lions and the Tafel Lager Griquas will compete for a spot in the final.

At 3pm, Western Province will go head-to-head with the Blue Bulls in the second semifinal clash.

Entrance is free and gates open at 8am.
