New York’s singing African Bee will soon be buzzing back to East London to perform a gig in her hometown after releasing her new album called Buzzed in the Big Apple.
Binx, 25 – or Bianca Buys, as she was known in her Clarendon High School days when she spent her spare time writing songs in her pink Berea bedroom – moved to the US five years ago where she has become synonymous with her African Bee persona and glam rock gigs at the city’s open mic hotspots.
She has performed at the New York Marathon for three years in a row, appeared at Madiba’s, a South African restaurant in New York, and recently took to the ring at a white-collar boxing event.
In East London, Binx will appear at Legends on December 14 at 8pm. “I am so excited to finally be bringing my live show to my hometown.”
She will also appear on SABC 3’s Expresso morning show on December 18.
Earlier this year, Binx, in her characteristic blonde beehive and sky-high heels, released an EP called The African Bee as a tribute to her beloved father, part-time party DJ Des Buys, who died suddenly a year ago.
“Buzzed is about being emotionally stirred,” said Binx, who often dons a black and yellow-striped honey bee performance leotard. Explaining her love for bees, she said they were a good omen and her “spirit animal” and that she would donate 3% of album sales to Environment New York for the insect’s conservation.
“They are so tiny yet their role in our world is so huge. I absolutely love honey and use it before every performance to soothe my throat.”
On Buzzed, the nine tracks, all self-written, include Jack Flash written in honour of her father who was a dedicated Rolling Stones fan. “It’s an adaptation of the Rolling Stones single Jumpin’ Jack Flash and was written about my dad,” said Binx.
The album is available online on Itunes, Spotify, Soundcloud, Google Play and YouTube and East London fans will be able to buy a physical copy of the CD at her Legends show.
“My song Feels So Good charted on the iTunes Top 100 and the American Top 40 charts on Spotify within the first week.”
After a short summer sojourn with her family and friends in East London and Cape Town, Binx will head back to the States, but is moving base from New York to Los Angeles.
“I love New York, but will be back and forth between both cities. Some music industry professionals have asked me to move to Los Angeles. I will be doing exactly what I’ve been doing in New York.”
