In less than two weeks Eastern Cape emerging designers will get to exhibit their work alongside top designers such as, Gert-Johan Coetzee, David Tlale, Thula Sindi and Laduma Ngxokolo at the annual Buyel’Ekhaya Fashion Show.
The show, in its second year, is part of the annual Buyel’Ekhaya Pan-African Festival founded by Nomahlubi Mazwai. Top designers and emerging ones will get to showcase all their work.
As a build-up to the day, emerging Eastern Cape designers were chosen to participate in an intense skills development and mentorship programme with top designers, Sindi and Tlale.
Port Elizabeth designer Ngxokolo, known for his knitwearinspired brand Maxhosa, is an agent of change, shifting and evolving with the changing times and further engaging in dialogue that pushes Xhosa culture to the future.
“This brand started five years ago and at this stage we will showcase revolution and also show that I’ve survived the five years. We will be expanding the business and designing more things, from T-shirts, jeans, calendars, business cards. We will be pushing all of that towards the ramp,” he said.
Ngxokolo has won a number of awards which include, Vogue Italia Scouting for Africa Award, International Society of Dyers and Colourists Design Award, Marie Claire Prix De Excellence Best Emerging Designer Award, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Rising Star Award, Africa Fashion International Emerging Designer of the Year award and, most recently, the Pride of Africa: Africa Fashion Week Barcelona Awards.
The emerging designers who will be featured on the show are Khanya Matolengwe, Lelethu Tyethe, Ludidi Onke, Lungela Sijila, Masimzukise Jack, Melinda Nkayi, Nomfuneko Kenyane, Ati Banoyolo, Nwabisa Setipa, Yanga Nginda, Zandile Goniwe. — email@example.com
