Weapons, drugs and booze found at Mdantsane prison

Warders at Mdantsane correctional facility live in fear as weapons, drugs and alcohol flow into the prison through holes in all three fences.

Provincial correctional services regional commissioner Nkosinati Breakfast said on Friday that vandalised fences and smuggling was not unique to the Mdantsane facility – in fact the problem was prevalent in provincial prisons.

The warders, who asked to remain anonymous, fearing victimisation, said their requests for repairs to the fences had not resulted in any action from their superiors.
