University Sport South Africa rugby action is on the menu today with the competition’s B Division moving into its next phase.

Local hope Fort Hare University has dropped into the lower half of the division after tasting defeat in the first match of the week.

They will now be looking to put in as good a performance as they can over the final two playing days of action.

“Many of our guys here would be playing second team, but they have been thrust in and playing against some of the best teams from the Varsity Shield, which is a tough challenge,” said Fort Hare coach Carlos Katywa.

“But it is a really good learning curve for them and they will grow from this.

“The most important aspects we are try to work on are the three elements of skills, teamwork and team culture, which will help us rebuild as a unit.”

The 39-17 defeat against the University of the Western Cape (UWC) was a disappointing one but the team showed some good signs towards the end of the game, although it did look like UWC had eased off the gas.

“I believe that this team can improve over the week,” said Katywa.

Fort Hare will meet another team who was also humbled on the first day, the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) who crashed to a massive 59-5 defeat at the hands of North West University Vaal.

This should thus be a match between two sides desperate for confidence and trying to gain a positive result.

For Fort Hare they also have the added incentive of learning from the week and taking as much out of it in preparation for next season.

“This week has come at the best time for us as we will be heading into our off-season soon and it has shown us where our major strengths and weaknesses are,” admitted Katywa.

“So in our final two games the goal is to give it our best shot while learning as much as we can so that we can plan for next year.”

The important B Division matches on the day will however be between NWU Vaal and UWC and Wits against Varsity College.

These four sides will be the ones gunning for the two final spots and will be going all out.

Wits with a 71-0 hammering of the Walter Sisulu University B team who had to slot into the B Division to make up the numbers at a late stage, along with NWU Vaal and UWC had easy run-ins on the first day so will need to be sharp against the tougher opposition today.

Varsity College had played to tight 29-24 win over the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) so they should be ready to take on Wits.

In the other match on the day TUT will play against WSU B and it should be another tough day at the office for the local side.

Fort Hare and UKZN will kick-off the days action at 8.30am at Buffalo Park, while WSU B and TUT will be playing at the same time on Old Selbornians A field.

The two main games will then be at Buffalo Park as well with Wits v Varsity College at 11.50am and UWC v NWU Vaal at 1.30pm.
