A WOULD-BE robber was shot and killed when a shoot-out between four gunmen and an off-duty traffic officer ensued in a busy mall in Mthatha.
Shoppers and workers ran for their lives when they heard gunshots at the Circus Triangle Mall around 6pm last night.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said the gunmen had just robbed Clicks Store at the mall as the shop was about to close.
“The robber was allegedly shot dead when he and his accomplices were escaping with cash from the store, and then shooting at an off-duty provincial traffic officer. The traffic officer returned fire and killed one of them in front of the store,” said Fatyela.
One of the suspects was arrested minutes after the robbery. The two other robbers are still at large.
