Banyana Banyana’s legendary striker Portia Modise announced her international retirement at Safa House today‚ but the South African Football Association said they will support the player in her ambition to become a coach.

Modise (32) scored 101 goals in 120 games for Banyana. She was in tears announcing the end to her national team career.

“It’s been my dream to show we could do it as women just as well as the men could‚” Modise said.

“My wish now is to see a women’s professional league in SA.”

Safa president Danny Jordaan said Modise had been one of SA’s best performers in any national team.

“She is the only SA player in any team to have scored more than 100 goals. To see today the end of a career of such a wonderful player is a sad moment for us.”

Jordaan said Safa will explore how Modise can continue her career in football.

The association will create a path for Modise to achieve the qualifications required to pursue a career in coaching‚ and have asked current Banyana coach Vera Paauw to assist in that process.
