The truck driver involved in the crash that killed Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane and two others appeared briefly in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo today.

Amukelani Rikhotso will remain in custody until his next court appearance on April 6.

The State indicated it would oppose bail when Rikhotso applied for it on a date yet to be decided. Chabane’s family were present at court, where a strong media presence awaited Rikhotso’s appearance.

Chabane and sergeants Lesiba Sekele and Lawrence Lentsoane died on Sunday morning when a truck allegedly made a U-turn in front of their car on the N1 between Mokopane and Polokwane.

Chabane and the sergeants died on the scene. The truck driver was unhurt.

Rikhotso was arrested for culpable homicide.
