Cops bust colleagues for committing crimes

A total of 686 police officers were arrested for various crimes during the 2014/2015 reporting year‚ according to the latest crime stats released in Parliament today.

No details were immediately provided as to the type of crimes‚ nor whether this was an increase in cop arrests from previous years as a result of a deliberate clampdown to rid the SA Police Service of its ‘bad apples’.

In July‚ police management announced the SAPS was improving its vetting procedures by implementing new methods that include lifestyle audits and lie detector tests‚ to ensure new police recruits are above reproach.

The move was in line with national police commissioner Riah Phiyega’s announcement earlier that month about a new disciplinary trial unit‚ instituted to deal with misconduct in the police ranks.

In April last year‚ the police ministry promised they would sack the 1‚448 officers with criminal records who were in the employment of the SAPS‚ which had been discovered after an audit. Among them were a major-general‚ ten brigadiers‚ 21 colonels‚ ten majors‚ 43 lieutenant-colonels‚ 163 captains‚ 84 lieutenants and 716 warrant officers.
