More than 200 schoolchildren and Equal Education (EE) members slept outside the Eastern Cape education department last night in protest over the release of implementation plans for provincial norms and standards for school infrastructure.

This was part of a nationwide protest organised by the lobby group to force Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga to release the plans.

EE provincial deputy head Daniel Linde said about 250 of its members‚ amongst them pupils from high schools in the province‚ slept outside the department’s headquarters in Zwelitsha last night.

“We demand transparency‚ and urgent release of the implementation plans across provinces. There are similar protests in Pretoria and Cape Town.”

Linde said they continued their protest in the early hours of today. A memo was also handed over to the department yesterday.
