The trial of the police crime intelligence unit’s former chief financial officer Solly Lazarus will begin in July, the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court ruled today.

Lazarus and the unit’s former head of logistics Hein Barnard are accused of stealing from a crime intelligence fund through a front company.

Both were suspended and charged with theft, fraud, and corruption. The duo appeared in court on Wednesday wearing dark suits.

The matter will return to court on April 2 for the filing of further particulars.

Prosecutor Andrea Johnson said their lawyers “might ask for further particulars”.

The case was initially said to involve R1.1-million, but on July 17, 2013, the amount they were accused of stealing was reduced to R370 000.
