No mention of Fifa scandal as Jordaan sworn in as mayor

Danny Jordaan has been sworn in as mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay in a ceremony in New Brighton.

Jordaan is the head of Safa‚ which has been accused of paying a US$10m bribe to Fifa’s Jack Warner to secure the 2010 World Cup tournament for South Africa.

The US indictment does not name the South African ‘Co-Conspirator #15“‚ but says the person was on the bid committee and on the local organising committee for the 2010 World Cup.

The indictment alleges that Warner was paid by diverting money from Fifa intended for South Africa‚ which avoided a South African paper trial.

Jordaan has made no comment on the scandal‚ saying only that this was not the appropriate time to talk about the events.

The ANC appointed Jordaan to the position of mayor in a bid to shore up dwindling electoral support after years of poor delivery by the corruption-wracked metro.
