Hundreds of students from Ingwe FET college’s Lusikisiki campus today gathered at the local police station to demand justice after two fellow students were killed in an accident on the busy R61 yesterday morning.

The action is a continuation of spontaneous protests which erupted after residents took to the streets to demand speed humps to curb reckless driving.

Police spokesman Captain Mzukisi Godlwana said the suspect is a well-known person in the area‚ but police have declined to release his name or further details.

On Friday morning‚ traffic on the busy R61 between Mthatha and Lusikisiki remained cut off after angry residents dug deep trenches and burned car tyres.

The R61 is a conduit between the Eastern Cape and most parts of the country‚ and thousands of motorists were turned away or redirected after the angry protesters pelted cars with rocks and wedges on the road.
