Two cops killed in ECape

Two police officers have been killed in separate incidents in the Eastern Cape, acting provincial commissioner Maj-Gen Zamuthango Mki said on Thursday.

Sergeant Wanda Jacob Mogale, 59, died in hospital after his girlfriend allegedly stabbed him in his house in Jamestown on Wednesday, Mki said in a statement.

The 42-year-old woman was arrested and charged with murder. She was expected to appear in the Jamestown Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Constable Simthembile Thandani, 30, was shot dead after he stopped a car on Njoli Road in Kwazakele, Port Elizabeth.

Thandani and another constable were on a routine patrol when they pulled over a red Toyota Corolla being driven recklessly on Wednesday.

"While the members were talking to the driver, two suspects appeared from the footpath and one of them had a firearm."

One of them shot Thandani, who returned fire, hitting one of the men, aged 32. Thandani died on the scene. His colleague was unharmed.

The 32-year-old was arrested and taken to hospital under police guard. A .38 special revolver was recovered.
