Partied up a storm despite the rain

THE rainy weather may have played a role in the fewer number of people who attended this year’s Sixties Festival over the Easter weekend, but hundreds nonetheless braved the bad weather for a bit of partying.

Although organisers expected a crowd of about 3000 , an estimated 1800 people attended to party up a storm on Saturday at the Gonubie Showgrounds, following several pre- parties on Thursday and Friday.

The Sixties Festival has been around for the past 16 years and it was its sixth visit to Gonubie.

Several well-known artists, including Donald Moatshe, Fistaz, and Pepsi were among those who performed on Saturday night.

Performances from Mahoota and Vetkuk had to be cancelled due to the rain, organisers said.

Despite the weather, the Sixties team and Kamvalezwe pulled off a successful event.

Admittedly, it did get off to a slow start, with a promise of gates opening at 12pm. However, when revellers arrived at about 1pm to enjoy an “all day event”, the organisers were still setting up. However, many said the long wait was worth it in the end.

Garth Mahambie said: “The event did not start when it was supposed to, which was a bit of a let down.

“I knew it was because of complications with the weather but they should have planned properly to avoid such a delay.”

Event organiser, Anele Daniels of Kamvalezwe, said: “We had to come up with a second plan because we initially planned for an all-outdoor event. However, we managed to pull it off when we moved people to a general marquee and had another for artists.” — /
