Comeback musician cracks the industry

AFTER years of releasing singles, Eastern Cape born musician Ifani has released his debut album, I believes in me.

Compiling the album has not been an easy task for Ifani, however he said his love for creating unique music had kept him “in the game”.

Ifani started making music in 2005, while growing up in Port Elizabeth.

“I tried to get my music out there but it didn’t pop off and so I decided to stop making music for the public ,” he said.

Nevertheless, Ifani did not stop recording his unique rhymes in Xhosa and Tswana.

“I made music for myself and friends. Only a few people heard my tracks,” he said.

It was after he did a song with a friend in 2008 that Ifani realised he had grown in confidence and was ready to start recording music for the public again.

Though he was rejected by music companies, he was adamant he would never change his unique style of music.

It took Ifani four years to release his debut album.

“It was hard to break into the music scene because the music companies were not used to my sound.

“I told myself I am not going to stop. I’ve been fighting battles since, even now,” he said.

Ifani is currently touring the province promoting his new album, which was released on April 29.

On the 16-track album Ifani said the intro song was his favourite , in which he shares his life’s story.

He said one of his songs, Iingoma ezimnandi (beautiful songs) brought back sad memories.

“It was hard recording that song in 2010 because that was the time my mother passed away and it was just before Ewe (one of the songs on the album) came out. People were celebrating my music, they would tell me their mothers and grandmothers loved my music and my mother passed away just before it happened,” he said.

Yesterday, Ifani performed at Walter Sisulu University in Postdam and at Mdantsane NU6’s Endaweni venue.

He will be performing in Mthatha today and in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

Next week he will be visiting Queenstown, Aliwal North and other towns around the province.

“I decided to bring the album home first, this is where it all started, in the Eastern Cape,” he said.

He said his follow-up album would come out next year.

“For now I will be doing more performances around the country and making music videos,” he said.

Ifani’s album is available at music stores across the country. —
