Circle turns, and lands Siphokazi top radio job

MDANTSANE-born radio presenter Siphokazi January has taken over Azania Mosako’s show on one of the biggest stations in the country, Metro FM.

January first came into the entertainment industry early in 2000 as an SABC continuity announcer. SABC1 then got rid of continuity presenters, and January headed to Cape Town where she was involved in radio and other work.

Back in the Eastern Cape for four years, she heard just last month that Mosako was moving on from Metro.

“A day after I heard that, I was asked to send in my stuff. I thought maybe I would get a graveyard shift or something but then I was asked if I can do a 9-12 show,” she said.

January said she was shocked when she was asked to take over the 9am to midday show.

“I couldn’t eat for the whole week. In a space of a week I had to get my stuff ready and move to Joburg.”

January said she could not believe she would be presenting one of her favourite shows on radio.

“I loved Azania’s show. I used to listen to her show on my way to do my show at Tru Fm,” she said.

Earlier, there were speculations that SABC1 Real Goboza presenter Phat Joe would be taking over Mosako’s Total Bliss.

January said the name of her new show is The Full Circle and they are tackling everything – from current issues to entertainment. Her first show was on Monday this week.

“I was nervous when I was doing it for the first time,” she admitted. “Moving from my two listeners to six million is a huge thing, but I am glad I had the training I had on Tru FM because otherwise I wouldn’t have pulled this one through.”

At Tru FM, January had been presenting The Real Deal Monday to Friday. Everyone had been supportive of her move to Joburg, she said, “from my family, to the producers at Tru FM and my colleagues”.

Having returned to the Eastern Cape, she was living with her family in Mdantsane.

“I was doing a show for Tru FM in Cape Town and they offered me a daily show, and I moved back.

“One of the reasons I moved back was to be closer to my parents,” she said.

But January said she was ready now for the big city. “I am more mature now. I was in Johannesburg 10 years ago. I had nothing to lose but now I am older and I have everything to lose.

“I am more prepared and I know what I want,” she said.

She said she could handle everything the big city brings her way.

January said her new team, which includes Naked DJ, was also supportive, and helped her find her feet in the new studio.

“I have a great team working with me. They have been holding my hand all the way,” she said. —
