Xhosa show returns for more laughs

Popular act makes fourth appearance.

EAST Londoners get ready for some laughs as the popular 99% Xhosa comedy show returns to the city for a fourth time this year.

The comedy show first came to the city in 2009 and has seen a number of local comedians perform for a sold out show. For the first three years, the event was held at the Orient Theatre but this year they started hosting it at the Venue@Hemingways.

The 99% Xhosa Comedy is the sister show to well-known 99% Zulu Comedy. The shows are both organised by the same people and at times see familiar faces performing in both. Organiser of the show, Monwabisi Grootbroom, said the current venue was smaller than the previous but had better sound.

“We had a deal with Tsogo Sun which allows us to use their casinos. This year we decided to have a show each quarter, giving people more chances to see their favourite comedians perform live,” he said.

Grootbroom said it was East London’s support that enabled them to keep on hosting shows in the city.

“They have kept on coming in large numbers.”

He said with each show they try to feature as many new faces as possible.

“There are many comedians who are now well-known and had their debuts at our shows,” Grootbroom said.

The show sees aspiring comedians opening up the event. A newcomer opens for all the comedians, which at times includes well-established people.

Daily Dispatch readers, responding to a Facebook post on the event, were eager to attend. Azikiwe Duma said she did not attend the previous shows but would not miss this one. Other readers said they would only attend if their favourite comedians were included in the show.

Grootbroom said from next year they would only host three shows in East London.

“Our schedule for next year is tight. We won’t be able to have four shows in East London. Our relationship with Tsogo Sun will enable us to do more shows across the country,” he said.

The 99% Xhosa Comedy crew will be in Cape Town this weekend. “There are guys who are going to perform in Cape Town and East London. Guys like Anele Shube who had their debut performances at the 99% Xhosa Comedy,” he said.

The line-up for next week’s show includes King Beema, Tips (Shampoo), Anele Shube, Siyanda Maphumulo, Skhumba Hlophe, Sifiso Nene and King Khotla. The show takes place next week on Friday from 8pm at the Venue@Hemingways. Tickets for the show are available at Computicket. —
