Nataniël to wow EL audiences with his own brand of humour

RENOWNED for his quirky personality, bald head and eccentric outfits, East Londoners are in for a treat as the ever-popular Nataniël graces the Guild Theatre stage with two performances next week.

For the past 23 years Nataniël has had audiences enthralled with his stagecraft, astounding vocal abilities and one-of-a-kind humour.

Last here in November 2012, the talented performer is excited to return to the city.

“It is always great to be back in a fully functional theatre with good sound and lights and of course a Steinway piano,” he said.

“I make a different selection of songs and stories depending on the venue, language and of course demographics of my audience. This (show) is tailor-made for EL.”

Nataniël says there is another side to him than what television audiences know.

“On TV people know me as a cook and comedian but for me music is the central part of the show. Lots of people who see me on TV don’t even know I am actually a singer,” he added.

Doing about 100 shows a year, Nataniël has sold-out performances nationwide, appealing to people from all walks of life.

He currently has 15 CDs and 14 books as well as more than 50 stage productions behind his name.

“We are now in Season 2 of Die Nataniël Tafel and season 3 is in the planning … I perform at Skouspel, do a tour of the Cape, then to Bloemfontein and a week run in Pretoria and that is only October, so things are very busy,” he said.

For his East London performance, unlike last time, Nataniël won’t be accompanied by a full band. This time around he is to be joined by Steinway artist, Charl du Plessis.

Plans are in the pipeline for him to record his second live CD, Mood Swing, in October with the Charl du Plessis Trio. The recording will include jazz material written by Nataniël.

Next week’s show, Nataniël in Concert, will feature his signature Afrikaans and English stories, a new collection of outfits and a mix of original music and covers.

Asked what set him apart from the rest, the performer jokingly said “his hair”.

“I am the most famous thing they will see on stage for R150 … I love beauty and want to show people some beauty on stage for a 90min show.

“I love being creative and making people laugh at the same time.” — shanaazp@dispatch.co.za
