Self-confessed vehicle rebuilding “addict” Leslie Thomas will be showing off his 1938 Chevrolet at the annual Wizards on Wheels Car Show on Saturday.

The car show, which is in its 12th year, will once again be a celebration of classic, vintage and unusual cars and this year will feature a monster 4x4 Jeep from Port Elizabeth called Tiny. Tiny is fitted with a fully built-in sound system that will rock the car-loving crowd.

Thomas has been exhibiting his Chevy at Wizards as a “work in progress” for the past three years so that visitors can monitor the headway he makes in turning the car from sad scrappiness to what is soon to be a budgie yellow Chevy with a 5.7-litre V8 engine.

“It was dilapidated and falling to pieces, but this year I have put seats in and most of the interior is done. It will be finished for 2017’s Wizards on Wheels because my daughter booked it for her matric dance next year and I can’t let her down.”

Thomas, who is a committee member of the Border Street Rod and V8 Club, which founded Wizards on Wheels, has about 15 battered old vehicles in his Cambridge yard and garage. They include a 1939 Austin buried under blankets and workshop clutter and a dusty 1962 Holden.

“It’s an addiction. To some, it is scrap metal, but to me it’s potential and can be revived for the next generation,” said Thomas, who will also be showing his Oros orange 1976 Ford Cortina on Saturday.

Visitors to the Wizards on Wheels car show will get an eyeful of old and new Mercedes-Benz vehicles from as far afield as Bloemfontein as well as lovingly restored beauties from the Border Vintage Car Club.

“The PE Street Rod Club is also bringing their old cars with modern-day mechanics and sound systems,” said Thomas.

A flea market, food stalls, beer tent and big screen TV will keep the family busy when they have taken in all the car displays.

l Gates to the Wizards on Wheels car show at Port Rex High open at 10am on Saturday and close at 3pm. Entrance costs R30 for adults and R10 for scholars. — barbarah@dispatch.co.za
