Cough up as retro makes comeback in SA – at hefty price

Out with the new and in with the old.

Retro has made a comeback in South African homes, but you may need to cough up the cash if you want the collectable items.

A search of “retro” or “vintage” on Bid or Buy brings about classic items such as vintage phones, alarm clocks, cameras and rare typewriters.

The South African auction website this month added Pargo, a click-and- collect delivery service established last year to help avoid postal delays or pricey courier costs.

Coin collectors who are not short on change can invest in a rare 1970 quarter dollar for R520000, while music lovers with deep pockets can pay R74776 for a classic Orchestra model of the Martin OM- 28E Retro guitar.

Launched in the US at $299 in 1994 (R295.45 according to exchange rate at the time), a Generation 1 Playstation game console is on sale for R400.

If you prefer something vintage, there is a 1980 Nintendo multi-screen hand-held console with an original Mario Bros game up for grabs at R1500.

From Pac Man and Kung Fu Master to Street Fighter and Wonder Boy, if you’re willing to part with R6200, you could get your hands on a retro arcade machine with 750 games.

A rare signed Todd McFarlane’s Spawn comic will cost you R2000. The animated TV series aired on HBO between 1997 and 1999, and was ranked fifth on IGN’s Greatest Comic Book Cartoons of All Time list.

It will cost you almost R2100 for a traditional rotary dial telephone with tone dial and R3892 for a red retro classic pay phone from 1950.

For those with a love for photography, there is the vintage Calypso underwater camera valued at R26000 for sale at half price, as well as a 1904 model of the Kodak retro iron tripod stand camera for R1980.

Action sports fanatics can pay about R4050 for a lime indy Penny Globe Bantam-style cruiser skateboard from the ’70s.

Two post-1950 vintage alarm clocks are going for R590, while an “extremely rare” Rahmenuhr clock costs R3950.

Internationally retro items, including turntables, typewriters, fountain pens, sewing machines and Polaroid cameras, are gaining popularity, with the latter SLR 680 model being sold for £430 (R9300) on eBay.
