Popular dancer Zodwa Wabantu will make her debut appearance in the Eastern Cape when she entertains students at the Mr and Miss University of Fort Hare pageant tomorrow.
Zodwa Wabantu, whose real name is Zodwa Rebecca Libram, tops the list of entertainers who will be performing at this year’s Mr and Miss University of Fort Hare, which will take place at the university’s Alice campus.
Speaking to the Daily Dispatch this week, Zodwa Wabantu, who is popularly known for not wearing any panties during her performances, said she would live up to the expectations of the students.
“I appreciate that I am invited. I am sure they will enjoy my dance moves.
“I will be wearing my mini-skirt, but that is not revealing too much. I am doing this dance thing in a right way and I do not want them to do what I do in a wrong way,” she said.
She was blasted by Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe earlier this month for not wearing any panties when she performs.
She was also banned from participating at an official government event in Zimbabwe after she refused to wear panties.
Zodwa Wabantu, one of the hottest properties in the South African music industry, promised her fans an energetic and electrifying performance.
“I have never been in the Eastern Cape before – this will be my first time setting my foot in the province and I am very excited,” she said.
SRC president Mosuli Cwele said preparations for the event were at an advanced stage.
“All artists who appear on the line- up have been booked and have confirmed their attendance,” he said.
Cwele said the pre-judging team would be at the East London campus today to trim down the number of contestants.
“And on Saturday all roads will lead to Alice, where the main even is taking place,” he said.
Other artists who will entertain the crowds include Nokwazi, Prince Kaybee and Lady Zamar.
Cwele said it was the students themselves who had suggested the list of artists.
“Because it is their event, we did not want to decide for them which artists . We then requested them to come up with suggestions on which artists we should include in the line-up,” he said.
The event was supposed to take place a few weeks ago but was postponed due to protests taking place at the university’s Alice campus.
Cwele said the competition was one of the main entertainment events held annually at the university.
He said, as usual, the winners would walk away with prizes, but he would not say what was up for grabs. — sinom@dispatch.co.za
