‘Marikana’ singer ready for take-off

Afro soul singer Lilitha Bidla, who made her debut in the music industry with her heartfelt single Marikana featuring Bongo Maffin’s Stoan Seate, will launch her debut album titled Ndim Lho next week.

Bidla made her debut in the music industry last year after releasing Marikana, a song inspired by the 2012 massacre. Even though she did not lose anyone in the tragedy, Bidla said the event had touched her.

The Mount Ayliff-born singer said her debut album was a way of introducing herself and her music to the public.

“A lot of people always ask who is Lilitha and this album answers their questions. It defines who I am and it’s about my life in general,” she said.

The 24-year-old said it had always been her dream to release her own music.

“I’ve always loved the arts. I was involved in drama, poetry and music when I was growing up. I used to be featured on our Sunday school plays but back then no one took that seriously,” she said.

It was only later in life that Bidla considered music as a profession.

“To broaden my musical knowledge and ensure that my music lives on, I decided to study music education. I am currently doing my second year now at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University,” she said.

Bidla said she had always looked up to musicians such as the late Miriam Makeba.

“Although she passed away, her music lives on and that is what I admire most about her. I also want my music to live on for generations. I take what I do seriously and I want to master my art and be the best in what I do,” she said.

The launch takes place on July 1 at the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre from 7pm. The event will also feature Nkevatsan and the host will be Stoan Seate.
