ANCYL welcomes SABC resignations

THE ANC Youth League (ANCYL) yesterday welcomed the resignations of the SABC board’s chairman and his deputy, saying this would bring “much needed stability to the SABC”.

SABC board chairman Ben Ngubane and his deputy Thami ka Platjie quit their posts on Monday after Communications Minister Dina Pule expressed concern about disunity in the board.

The SABC reported on Monday that Pule’s spokesman Siyabulela Khoza said President Jacob Zuma would have to decide whether or not to accept the resignations.

This drama comes a month after the board “redeployed” acting chief operations officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng back to his position of a group executive of provinces.

The league’s spokeswoman Khusela Sangoni-Khawe yesterday said it was critical the SABC “has order and stability in its governance structures for it to properly fulfil its role as a public broadcaster”.

“We note with concern that the only permanently filled position at the most senior levels in the SABC is the Group CEO, as the chief financial officer is also currently on suspension and facing an investigation,” she said.

Sangoni-Khawe also called on the minister and board to explain “why they have been dragging their feet on filling the vacancy of the COO which has been vacant for far more than five years”.

The league also called for an urgent release of reports by both the auditor-general and the Special Investigative Unit into the operations of the SABC.
